Striped Elegance

New York: Lincoln Center

Inspiration:  I was inspired by his striped shirt. I have so many striped shirts myself that I am drawn to them on other people. But his expression is priceless.

Trash or Treasure?

New York: Park Avenue and 16th Street

Inspiration: Someone created this. He or she likely spent weeks crocheting this "coat of many colors" for a trashed half-bike. I wonder what happened to cause the creator to toss out his or her art with the ordinary garbage? Maybe it was a new roommate or husband or wife who said "It's me or that thing." In any event, there was something ugly-beautiful about this brilliantly -colored, blanketed half-bike, especially as it lay against the dull gray of the trash bags. 

Sweater Dressing

New York: Washington Square Park

Inspiration: She injected a shot of electric color into Washington Square Park as she wandered through. For the black and white story, check out The Photodiarist.

Hello Yellow

New York: Lincoln Center

Inspiration: I love the color yellow. But yellow shoes? Never. Ever. Aha . . . one thing one must never do is say never. Because when I saw his laced-up wingtips in glorious yellow, I forgot my fears about Big Bird chasing me down the street for his dress shoes and thought -- I could do this. With some wide legged blue jeans, a really slim fitting black sweater, a bulky colorful knit scarf and a fedora tipped a bit to the side. How would you style these shoes?

The Bike Helmet

New York: Mercer Street, Soho

Inspiration: Now this is an elegant way to protect one's head while biking -- a gorgeous herringbone riding helmet!

The Suit

New York: Lincoln Center

Inspiration: I remember that once he walked through the crowds at Lincoln Center, the photographers were tripping over themselves to get a photograph of him. When I finally caught up to him, I could see why. I mean check out this suit AND the matching cap!

Trenched

New York: Lincoln Center

Inspiration: I have a deep love thing . . . a pounding heart . . . for a sleeveless trench. Also seen here on Kate Lanphear.

The Jaunty Man

New York: In front of Bergdorf Goodman on 58th Street and 5th Avenue

Inspiration: A couple of hours ago, as the sun was setting and the light was fading in the city (thank goodness for my camera's awesome ISO), I saw the most jaunty looking chap walking past BG's with his friend, whom he introduced as his designer (she designed his headpiece). I did a double take as I walked in the other direction and he saw me do it too! But that double take resulted in a little chat, and shortly after that, this photograph. This city is a veritable treasure trove of fascinating and intriguing people. I cannot get enough of this place.

Lucky Charm

Color Mixology

New York: Lincoln Center

Inspiration: I was once told that red and fuchsia were two colors that needed to be kept apart -- like black and navy (yet, I wear black and navy together all the time). But rules like that (along with no white after Labor Day and matching accessories) serve only to hamper creativity. If a color combination pleases your eye or serves to express your own personal style as envisioned by you, then it works.
