New York: W. 26th and 9th Avenue (first and third); Lincoln Center (second)
Inspiration: Even though there are over 50,000 cabs cruising the streets of New York every day, you can pretty much count on the fact that of the thousands of them zooming past you, all will be taken. Meaning the light is off (or off duty). Another thing you can count on when looking for an available taxi in the middle of thousands of unavailable taxis is New York cab etiquette, which is like everything else about this city . . . competitive. So don't be surprised if after you've been waiting on the corner for at least 15 minutes, the only cab in sight with a bright available light that is heading towards you -- that you know is yours -- mysteriously stops just in front of you to pick up some guy (or gal). The same guy (or gal) who, just a few seconds ago, walked by you ever so slyly and casually on the side of the street as if he (or she) were waiting for traffic to stop in order to cross to the other side only to pop his (or her) hand in the air at the perfect time knowing full well that you've been waiting there first. If this ever happens to you, you should feel neither angst nor worry about the inelegant way you appear as you run (hobble) down the street in 5-inch heels with your pencil skirt hiked up over your knees yelling: "Hey!!!! Are You Kidding Me Right Now? I've been waiting forever! That cab is mine!" Because every now and again, the "cab stealer" may open the door of the cab . . . but instead of jumping in, waits for you to hobble up and slide inside before closing the door and sending you on your way. Speaking from personal experience, of course.
Great shots ad usuale!

Hey, here's a brilliant idea! USE THE SUBWAY!!!
Posted by: the nyanzi report | March 10, 2011 at 02:16 PM
I use the subway 8 times out of 10 . . . but there are days, times, (and certain places in the city) that call for a cab. Hands down. You must know how that goes in London . . .

Great cab story. It is the same in London and our cabs are not as prolific as yours. Xxxx

That's so true... I forgot about that in NY. You know from visiting London - you don't get that. The competition. Or it's more.. subtle.
Thanks for your comments, sweet PD. So many great posts to catch up on. I love your coverage of NYFW.
Oh by the way did I answer your question re: fur? Yes, it was everywhere in London, too. Even in the rain. Soggy fur.
So surreal right now - tsunami. It's hard to get my head round anything else.
