New York: Coney Island, Brooklyn
Inspiration: Winter beaches aren't for everyone. The winds are harsh. The water is uninviting (except to the Polar Bear club). The sun is weak and leaves us in mid-afternoon. The cold is bitter. There's little to do but roam the coast and walk the pier. And nothing much to eat if you get hungry. But maybe because of all of these things, I find winter beaches so beautiful. They are quieter and uncrowded and the light is lovely. Summer beaches are easy to love and fun to photograph. But after enduring frozen fingers, biting temperatures and a moody camera that just wasn't interested in dealing with the cold, I must admit I love my winter beach photographs more.

winter beaches definitely have more attitude. there is a certain mood to these pictures that i love!

These pictures are pure. That's what makes them so beautiful.

I loved spending summers there as a kid. Going there a few year older than a kid, during the seasonal times, you truly see the beauty of coney island.

Those are wonderful shots...I admit I enjoy taking pictures of a winter beach more too, fingers frozen to my camera, but a great sense of capturing something interesting wins over. Beautiful photos :)

when someone says winter and beach in the same sentence, i get jitters down my spine. brrrrrrr
however, having said that, winter beaches do make beautiful pictures.
the purity and light is awesome.

I really like these horizontal compositions. I guess they are partly dictated by the subject. They work very well. There is also something very soothing about them. I wonder whether one could say: horizontal=soothing; vertical=violent; diagonal=disturbing; circle/spiral=confusing etc. (I am exaggerating slightly: I think any effect can be obtained from any composition, however some compositions seem to lead more easily to some feelings).

These are beautiful. I can hear the noise in your summer shots as much as I hear the silence in these.

@ Audrey: I totally agree. Way more attitude.
@ Biana: Thank you.
@ Therese Alexandra: What a beautiful comment. Much thanks for it.
@ Kaye Beeh: I think I like Coney Island best in the Winter.
@ Timbarikadoll: Totally agree with you.
@ The Nyanzi Report: David -- you are a man of summer. And I am also a girl of summer. Winter is definitely not my favorite season. But I have to admit that I love the quiet landscape of winter beaches.
@ Davidikus: I wouldn't go that far but you are right. Landscapes require horizontal shots.
@ Alexandra: Yes -- so true.

Another beautiful series. Love the vastness and the ability to be alone, which you don't get in Summer.

@ Style Odyssey: The light was gorgeous, I must say.
@ Alice Olive: Coming from you, a very talented photographer, this compliment means a lot!
@ Charles: Hi there. Thanks for your lovely words. And am happy you liked the Central Park series too. It's a place that New Yorkers sometimes take for granted. So I wanted to highlight how magical it is.
@ Lisa: It was so cold too!
