Inspiration: There was something quirky and charming about her school-girl jacket, sweater and lacy frilled top paired with shorts (see here for another take on that look). But the look on her face was so austere as to be a little intimidating. Yet, in a way, she reminds me of that John Currin painting, Rachel in Fur, albeit a tougher version. What do you think?

Very impressive portrait and so close to Rachel in fur, that's amazing. It could be fun to shoot a whole serie of portraits close to paintings. Bravo, dear.

Yes, I can see the Currin-esque element. She's sort of timeless. Is it the jacket?

She looks like a snobbish Ballet Dancer to me, though I couldn't say why.
The jacket is nice. Great portrait

PS: What do you think of snakeskin accessories? I hated them until today, now I've got rubberboots with snakeskin print and love them to bits.
You find them on my blog. ;-) Cheers

This portrait does call to mind Rachel in Fur (that painting, by the way, is one of my favorites!--I was introduced to it a year ago, through a friend). Too bad the woman you photographed is not as humorous. Her silent portrayal of the stereotypical Private School Girl is fantastic, though, as it practically makes the picture.

That's pretty amazing. Just different shaped face. She also reminds me a lot of my 13 year old niece Becky who has been a recent photographic subject (this summer) but who, alas, like my other niece, her cousin, I can't yet show to the world. (and yes, she does look a bit.. stern, for the schoolgirl look).
I just wrote you the world's longest reply on a post - I don't remotely mind. I really was impressing myself, the eloquence.. and then something happened with my connection, 'service unavailable' and it is gone. Forever.
Please bear with me.. you asked good questions and I was asking you questions back about what/why you shoot the way you do.. I must run out shortly to see a friend (Jen actually!) but hopefully will be able to recreate the thought later.
Oh on a fashion note btw: I'm really into school jackets, too. Wore one to LFW, will post it eventually.

Yes there's Currin-like resemblance to it.
Love her style and the way you shot it. Looks timeless and classic in b/w

She looks very austere & severe: more like a spinster-schoolteacher than a schoolgirl. Great shot.

I don't know the painting, but I think there is a certain pulled-togetherness in the ensemble that matches her face. Wonderful picture!

The super short hemline seems such a contrast to an otherwise 'schoolgirl/prepster' look!
