Pearl the Mime: Getting Ready

New York: Union Square

Inspiration: On Sunday evening, after spending the day walking around the city in the muggiest weather ever (did I say that I love sweltering Manhattan? okay, that was before yesterday), I ran into Pearl The Mime.  I learned that her real name is Margot and she was preparing to put on a show somewhere in the Square. She's been miming since the 7th grade and now does it professionally. It's not often (or ever) that I get to document a mime getting ready for a show, so I asked her permission to take a few photographs. Margot/Pearl, the sweetest person(s) ever, said yes. As she applied powder to her face, the stuff landed everywhere - on her arms, glasses and the ground. I didn't realize how much makeup was needed to obtain the perfect "Mime" face. I'll post more photographs of Margot/Pearl "acting up" later.

Inspiration: "This is Mr. Cool coming to you live from New York City."  

I really don't know what he was saying but he was filming himself with, and talking into, a Flip video camera. He was kind of fun to watch.

Building Lines Reflected, Pt. 2

New York: Park Avenue

Inspiration: I like this one because of the near perfect stillness of the water, which created this wonderful mirror. It lasted for a few seconds, though. Shortly after I took this, the light turned green and cars whizzed by turning this mirror into muddy water.

Building Lines Reflected, Pt. 1

New York: Park Avenue

Inspiration: As I ran out of my apartment to head to the gym this morning, I decided to throw my little Canon g10 in my bag. For some reason, it has been sitting on my coffee table for the longest while.  I am glad I did. As I stood on the corner, waiting for the green light, I saw this beautiful reflection of buildings in a dirty puddle of water surrounded by the grit of the city road. After weeks of shooting portraits, I am finding myself gravitating towards architecture once again. . .

Summer Summer Summer Time!

New York: Washington Square Park

Inspiration: When the fountain in Washington Square Park is on, you know it's summer in the city! During the summer weekends, many of my friends escape to the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore. Except for a weekend every now and again, I can be found right here, in the middle of sweltering Manhattan and loving every minute of it!

Strike a Pose

New York: 14th and Broadway

Inspiration: When I asked him for a photo, he went for it immediately. No questions asked. In fact, he promptly struck a pose with attitude. He was fun to photograph!

Scooter Love

Inspiration: I just thought they were adorable together as they scooted around the square.

The Braid

New York: Union Square

Inspiration: I took this photo because of the sweetness of it. There's something girly and sweet about a friend fixing another's hair. The other reason is because the girl creating the braid also wears a braid of sorts.

New York: East 3rd and First Avenue

Inspiration: Before I saw this rather ominous portal, I didn't realize that New York was home to a Hells Angels chapter. I took only one photo. The door made me nervous.
