New York: 40th Street and 5th Avenue
Inspiration: All over the world, an hour is an hour, a minute is a minute and a second is a second. So why is it that in New York, it seems as though an hour is a minute. A minute is a millisecond and a second is not even measurable? I suppose that the ever-quickening velocity of the city and the overwhelming number and diversity of things to do here makes time seem as if it is flying at a pace that rivals sonic jets. The shortness of the proverbial "New York Minute" combined with a to-do list that is as long as Lebron James is tall makes me yearn periodically for total, utter relaxation. In its purest form, this means (at least for me) no work, no going out on the town, no photography, no walking around, no reading, no filling my mind with information, not doing anything but just sitting (or lying) around, watching people and time go by. Unfortunately, I've always been (and remain) hyper-conscious of time. The passage of it, the efficient use of it, the pace of it, the waste of it. But sometimes, killing time is the best use of time.

Grrrrrreat serie. The man looks like a master in killing time. A serial time killer.

great post.
many years ago, i stopped wearing a watch when i moved to the caribbean, as it seemed to make little difference in a place known for its lackadaisical attitude about time. we call it "island time". seriously.

So true!
I remember that about NY: everything was in motion. At any given time, I had like three different plans. We were all used to having back-up plans, since friends would cancel @ the last moment if He called, and no one wanted to be left without a plan.
Maybe I'm older or maybe it's London, but now I LOVE killing time. And I'm happy to be alone in my own skin.
Love also the blurred image of the bird in flight. Movement thru time, standing still.

it surely has to see with age... when you grow up, you discover that life is good and have sense even doing nothing!

This reminds me of a scene from Last Chance Harvey where Dustin Hoffman's character is sitting after a long night as the morning dawns. Love it!

I think you would find it the same with all major financial cities. Hong Kong is another fine example of an hour is a minute.

Nicholas -- have never been to Hong Kong, but I don't doubt it. But it's not that way in London . . . which is another major hub of finance.

just came across your blog and I love your thoughts! I feel the same about the city. Just walking around killing time with a camera can create a whole day of amazing finds.

There is an art to beautifully "wasting" time. But as I learned from spending time in Paris and learning to sit at a sidewalk café and do "nothing," it's not really wasted.

really nice candids!

I love this post. What incredible candids! His earnest expression seems as though he is watching time like it's a physical thing, jutting and jerking throughout space.
